Traces of Enayat by Iman Mersal is a genre-defying work of literary biography and investigation. Mersal becomes fascinated by the forgotten Egyptian writer Enayat al-Zayyat, whose only novel was published posthumously after her suicide in 1963.
Through archival research, interviews, diaries and visits to places connected to Enayat's life, Mersal reconstructs the writer's story and the literary and social world of post-revolutionary Cairo. The book won the 2024 James Tait Black Prize for Biography.
