The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) by Rabih Alameddine is a tragicomic family novel set largely in Beirut. Sixty-three-year-old Raja, a philosophy teacher, lives with his fiercely intrusive mother, Zalfa.
When Raja receives an invitation to a writing residency in America, he hopes for an escape from Lebanon and his mother. Instead, the opportunity forces him to revisit decades of family memories, political turmoil, trauma and past betrayals. The novel combines dark humour with a moving exploration of family, memory, identity and forgiveness.
