My Friends by Hisham Matar follows three Libyan friends—Khaled, Mustafa and Hosam—whose lives are transformed after they become involved in a demonstration outside the Libyan embassy in London.
Wounded when government officials open fire on the protesters, they remain connected through decades of friendship, political upheaval and exile. When revolution comes to Libya, each must confront the distance between the life they have built abroad and the homeland they left behind. The novel explores friendship, family, exile, belonging and the lasting impact of political violence.
