A Stranger in Baghdad by Elizabeth Loudon is an intergenerational novel moving between Baghdad and London.
The story begins in 2003, when Anglo-Iraqi psychiatrist Mona Haddad receives an unexpected visitor who may finally reveal what happened to her family before they left Iraq. The narrative then travels back to 1937, following Mona's English mother Diane, her Iraqi husband Ibrahim and a British Embassy officer in Baghdad.
Set against the final years of the Iraqi monarchy and the political tensions surrounding British involvement in Iraq, the novel explores family, cross-cultural marriage, colonialism, displacement and the experiences of women caught between different worlds.
